Camels invade Vienna football pitch

Well I’ve seen a few strange sights and experienced some unusual events watching football over the years but a pitch invasion by camels and lamas was a first for me.

H had finished her game for the First Vienna FC U11 Girls and had asked if we could stay on to watch the U15 Girls match as one of her friends was playing. The early part of the game saw Vienna take the lead and the main point of note, other than the quality of the football, was a friendly exchange of views between the referee and one of the parents over a contentious decision. The sun was shining, the game was in full flow, and life was unfolding at First Vienna’s youth training centre as normal last Sunday morning. Then we heard a crash….

Over beyond the right hand goal a temporary paddock had been placed to allow camels and lamas from the travelling circus to graze. As we looked across we saw one of the more determined camels give a second push to the rapidly collapsing fence. This Houdini of the camel world showed no interest in the game of football being played but instead turned its attention to the lush grass before it.

Even as our escape artist was joined by fellow camels and a number of lamas the game continued. We spectators were laughing and joking at the sight before for us and naturally people were reaching for cameras and camera phones. Someone was sent to rouse the circus folk and as more animals joined the initial breakout the referee was finally forced to call a temporary halt to the game.

By the time the animal’s keepers had arrived a number of the lamas had followed Houdini along the grass edge of the pitch and towards further grazing near the main builds. Suddenly the rest of the herd took off a speed to join them, chased by their circus guardians.

Suddenly the initial shock and humour of the crowd of parents changed to concern as the whole herd began to move back towards the pitch. We parents had been watching the game from the top of a slope adjacent to the pitch and were know shouting to the youngsters to join us on the safer high ground. As calm returned we all watched as keepers chased the animal around the pitch before successfully returning them to the paddock.

The referee called the players back on the pitch and resumed the game. Over to our right a group of well exercised camels and lamas were being guided from their paddock into the big top.

One goal short of true happiness

There were a few tears, others were smiling but the joy was a little subdued. First Vienna U13 Girls, last Saturday, had progressed to the final of the indoor tournament only to face defeat to Landhaus U13 Girls.

First Vienna had progressed through four games in the girls’ football tournament undefeated and without conceding, only to lose by a single goal in a closely fought final. I suspect, as these two teams progressive through league and tournaments in coming years, there will be many more close run competitions between the two.

Winning with skill and determination – First Vienna FC U13/U11 Girls

Last weekend the First Vienna FC U13 Girls secured their first win of the season. It was not just the 2:5 score line that left the girls, coaches and parents happy, it was the skill and commitment the girls demonstrated.

The weekend before saw the First Vienna FC U11 Girls secure an even more emphatic 1:12 win. Some pic’s from the game can be seen here

The U13 Girls have a tough season ahead but at the moment they are enjoying securing their first league points:

That scoring feeling with First Vienna

Last Friday night the U11 Girls ran out with the First Vienna senior team…

It was a good night for First Vienna FC with a win over second placed Lustenau….

I got lucky and snapped the ball hitting the back of the net for the first goal in the teams’ 3:1 win…

The following morning the First Vienna U11 Girls were back on the pitch in their own game which ended in a 5:2 defeat….

But again I happen to get a picture of Vienna’s first goal….. 🙂

For First Vienna U11 Girls Football Team the plan is to keep going and win through.

I knew the answer but felt obliged to ask the question.

After the U11 girls’ third match and third heavy defeat I turned to H and asked her ‘Do you want to keep playing?’ With a look that said ‘unnecessary, stupid question’ she instantly replied ‘Of course!’ Then after a few moments reflection, a smile growing across her face, she added ‘Soon we’re going to win.’

The girls have a lot of technical ability already and a great team spirit, though they’ve only been together since last September. Since entering league completion in March, they have come up against boys’ teams that have been a little physically stronger and who have played together for a while. But this hasn’t stopped the team from playing some good football and enjoying themselves. The emphasis from the coach is on developing their skills and learning to play effective passing football, an approach which is fully supported by the parents.

Next season the girls will be playing against teams of a similar size and will have further developed as a team. However, whilst we may all be expecting to wait until then for the first win the girls’ determination, commitment and skill may yet surprise us all.
