First Vienna Football Club and the Rothschild scarf

Some readers who follow my Twitter and/or Instagram accounts may have seen this picture taken last Friday of my new First Vienna scarf. It has on one side the name of the team and on the other the name of a group of Vienna fans – Partisan Rothschild.

I’ve been asked by a few people ‘Why Rothschild?’ The answer is connected to the clubs history. As you can read further here at Wikipedia, FVFC was founded by English and Austrian gardeners working for Nathaniel Anselm von Rothschild. He got so fed-up with the gardeners playing football on his lawns he gave them a piece of land to play on and yellow-blue jockey shirts from his riding stables.

First Vienna Girls, First Tournament, First Trophy

Today, in their first competitive U12’s tournament the girls of First Vienna Football Club walked away with the winners’ trophy.

The squad for the tournament played in a round robin competition and took on girls teams from Altenmarkt, Ortmann, Felixdorf, and Teesdorf. The event took place in the Lower Austria town of Pottenstein, a little under an hours’ drive from Vienna.

H came on as substitute in two of the four matches and although having only limited game time declared herself happy to have been part of the winning squad.

First Vienna results were 5:0, 6:0, 3:2 & 5:0

Oh yes and they had an unusual approach to collecting their trophy.

And the parents all seemed to enjoy the day as well.

When losing is a positive

They left the field after conceding seven goals and scoring one from a penalty, but the U11 First Vienna Girls Team were in high spirits. Most importantly, last Tuesday night, the girls had had fun and were full of smiles. They had just played their first match together and although an internal friendly against one of the FV Boys’ teams, they had taken that first step towards becoming a competitive team. Of some further satisfaction, I’m told, was that the boys’ team (who I understand have been playing together for two years) did not score the ten goals some of the boys had predicted.

The U11’s showed that they had developed a good team spirit in their first two months of training and possess a lot of individual ability. The challenge now will be to work on their team play and further skills development. Commitment and fun were clearly already on display in abundance and the girls were disappointed that training the following night had been called off, as no pitch was free.

For the girls of First Vienna U11’s the next test will come on the morning of Sunday 20th November when they face their first external opponents. Win or lose, they will undoubtedly enjoy themselves and take a further step towards their goal of joining a competitive league next year.

After the training comes the first challenge

Since their formation in September the U11 First Vienna Girls Football squad have been training hard twice a week. The girls have really jelled well as a group, whilst their skills and talents have begun to develop in leaps and bounds. Tonight they get their first chance to see how far they have progressed. They’ll be playing an internal friendly against the more established U9 boy’s team.

The game will be good warm-up for their first external friendly scheduled for Sunday 20th November. Later next year the girls will be joining a league and facing regular competitive matches.

First Vienna girls start training

H joined other girls at the Hohe Warte stadium, last Monday, for the second taster session and trial for First Vienna FC’s new girl’s football teams. With parents sitting in the stands watching on the club coaches took the girls through an hour long training session. The quality of footballing skill shown by many of the girls was highly impressive.

Now the serious effort will begin on the 26th September with the girls having twice weekly training sessions and playing friendly matches over the course of the season (and then entering league competition next year). For the parents watching on its going to be an entertaining but rather cold winter 🙂

Good start

Congratulations to First Vienna who continued their good start to the season with a 1:0 home win last night, unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to go down and watch the match. Vienna are now second in the league with 7 points after three games:

On a frustrating note Austria Wien began their season on Sunday with a 2:0 away defeat to Salzburg. Luckily opening games are rarely an indication of how the season will unfold.

Frustration abounds as prior longstanding commitment mean that I’m unable to get down to Klagenfurt today to see Leicester City’s friendly against Bursaspor. Nor will I be able to make their match against Valencia on Saturday.

The Vienna romance continues

Last Friday H again stepped on to the First Vienna pitch, this time holding the hand of new signing Matthias Hattenberger. She and her friend L, who also accompanied one of the players, spent the game cheering the team and discussing the forthcoming trials for the girl’s team in September:

The game itself was an entertaining 4:2 win for First Vienna, who after the weekend games sit fourth in the league with 4 points from two games. A few images from the evening:
